Thanks to all of the people who attended and/or supported the Schizophrenia Research Gala!

We are very grateful to the generous sponsors who helped us hold such a fantastic event:

Event Sponsors: Biovail - PCL - Janssen-Ortho - Pfizer - Anonymous
Table Sponsors: AMHB - NRU - PNL - Eli Lilly - CGI - CV Technologies

It was a tremendous success: we grossed $33,195.59; after expenses, we raised $25,557.18 for the Bebensee Schizophrenia Research Unit. This is more than 2 times the amount we sent last time!

In 2001, a generous donation from the Bebensee family made possible the creation of the Bebensee Schizophrenia Research Unit (BSRU) at the University of Alberta. In support of the BSRU's continued research and care delivery, the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta, Edmonton & Area Chapter (SSAEA) and the BSRU host a fundraising gala every two years.

You can help us brighten the lives of the one in 100 Albertans who will develop schizophrenia in their lifetime. Although more Canadians will be diagnosed with this devastating illness than Alzheimer's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis or Type 1 Diabetes, minimal funds are available for mental health research.

The BSRU is made up of a dynamic team of world class researchers who investigate, among other things, brain abnormalities in patients, treatments, and risk factors for developing schizophrenia nd psychosis. In addition to this more traditional research, the BSRU also has a clinical arm that provides comprehensive, state-of-the-art treatment and support for young adults and adolescents experiencing a "first episode" of psychosis. The Edmonton Early Psychosis Intervention Clinic, or EEPIC, serves both patients and their families, intervening early in the course of the illness to speed up recovery. This immediate real world application of ground-breaking research is unique in the world, and if offers Albertans a distinct and valuable health care advantage.
