Flag of Hope Iris Campaign

The “Flag of Hope” Iris Campaign 2008 is a province-wide fundraiser in support of the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta. All money raised will help fund critical programs and services for people affected by schizophrenia and other severe mental illnesses.
All proceeds from the purchase of these beautiful iris bunches will go to your Edmonton & Area
Chapter for programs that provide information, individual and family support, public education, outreach services, and advocacy for families and individuals living with schizophrenia and other mental illnesses.
We will begin taking orders for irises in Edmonton, Camrose, Red Deer, Calgary, Medicine Hat, and Lethbridge on March 18, 2008. We are selling bunches of irises at 1 for $8.00 or 2 for $15.00. For any businesses that purchase 5 bunches or more, they can receive free delivery. Orders of less than 5 bunches can still have their irises delivered for a fee of $5.00.
We will be sending out the order form (click here to download it) by fax to businesses throughout the Edmonton area on March 18th. If you don't want to receive faxes like this in the future , you need to contact the company that we contracted for this fax out. Please visit www.nothx.net or call 1-866-553-1280 ext. 956. We do not have access to the fax list they use.
We will be accepting orders (sent by fax to (780) 482-3027) until April 11th. We will then deliver the irises on April 22nd and 23rd. April 23rd is Administrative Professionals Day, so this is a great and easy way to reward hard-working staff and also support a local charity. We will also be out and about, selling irises in public venues in Edmonton on April 22nd and 23rd. We will have a list of locations available here shortly.
Volunteers Needed for Iris Campaign!
We are in need of volunteers who would be willing to help deliver irises and help sell them at our public venues. Please contact Colin Simpson at (780) 428-2465 or cosim@ssa-edmonton.com to help us with this labour-intensive campaign. We will compensate delivery drivers for mileage at $0.445 per km.
Any inquiries about the Flag of Hope Iris Campaign can be directed to Shannon Pasiuk at (403) 342-5760 (in Red Deer).

What is the Open Minds Walk and Run?
The Open Minds Walk & Run is the SSA Edmonton Chapter's major annual fundraiser, but it's also a celebration! We want to see you! This year, we are pleased to announce that we will be partnering with our sister chapter in Calgary, making the Open Minds Walk and Run a provincial event.
Participants raise pledges leading up to the event. On event day they turn in their pledges, enjoy a light breakfast, and then take part in one of our four events. The line up is as follows:
- 2.5k Fun Walk. Find your strength in numbers! Family, friends and persons with mental illness of all ages and athletic ability are invited to walk together once around Hawrelak Park’s ring road. The fun walk has always been the core of our event. This year there will be a drink stop along the way with volunteers to cheer you on.
- 5k Trail Walk. This walk presents a challenge for those who want to pick up the pace while enjoying the beautiful river valley trails. Race walking is a trend catching on all over North America, so don’t miss out if you’d like to try training for something new. This is a chip-timed event.
- 5k Road Run. It’s back! For those runners who like a shorter length and a smoother running surface, we’ve brought back our original 5k run, twice around Hawrelak Park. It is now a chip-timed event.
- 10k Trail Run. New last year and back for the second time, this challenging chip-timed event takes runners along the lush North Saskatchewan River bank from Hawrelak to Emily Murphy Park and back again.
After the walking or running, participants enjoy a free barbecue provided by Canadian Western Bank. There will be games for the kids, free 5-minute massages, foot scans, blood pressure and body fat checks by the Foundation for Wellness Professionals, and high energy roots reggae music performed by the critically acclaimed group Souljah Fyah.
This year we will have shaded outdoor seating to accommodate the increased number of participants at our growing event.
What a great way to spend a Sunday in September!

When & where is it?
In 2008, the event will take place on September 7th at the pavilion overlooking the lake in Hawrelak Park. The order of events (to be confirmed) is as follows:
8:30 am – registration, pledge check-in, free breakfast
10 am – 10k trail run start (chip timed)
10:10 am – 5k trail walk start (chip timed)
10:20 am – 5k road run start (chip timed)
10:25 am – 2.5 k fun walk start
11:30 am – draw and race prizes handed out, free BBQ, games for kids, live music

What are the registration fees?
There is no fee for participating in the 2.5 k fun walk. Chip-timed walkers and runners pay an early bird fee if they register before July 31, and the regular fee thereafter. We pride ourselves on offering a great race event for a reasonable price.

How do I register?
For the chip-timed 10 k trail run, 5 k trail walk or 5 k road run, you must first become a member of the Running Room online. Once you have your Running Room username and password, you can register for the Open Minds Walk and Run and start collecting pledges. See our How to Register and Collect Pledges Online sheet for step-by-step instructions, then go to www.RunningRoom.com and follow these instructions.
If you don't want to register online, you can fill out the entry form attached to our brochure and drop it off along with the appropriate fee at any Running Room location. Print our brochure from the web or call 452-4661 to have one mailed to you.
All chip-timed event participants must register before event day.
2.5 k fun walkers may register online using the same method as above, but this is necessary only if you want to make use of the online pledge collection system. If you do not wish to collect pledges online, simply show up on the day of the event to register and drop off your pledges at the same time.

How do I collect/donate pledges online?
In 2006, we introduced an online pledging system through the Running Room.
The system helps walkers and runners set fundraising goals, track their online pledges and send request emails to potential sponsors.
Collecting Pledges: To access this system as a walker or runner, you must first become a member of the Running Room online and register for our event. For instructions, see our How to Register and Collect Pledges Online sheet. After you have signed up, see our Tips for Fundraising.
Donating Pledges: If you wish to make an online donation to a registered walker or runner, you can use your credit card to do so through the Running Room website here.

How do I form a team?
All team members must first register as individuals. For instructions, please see How do I register? above.
After you have registered as an individual, you can form a team and qualify for additional prizes. Just follow these steps:
1. Read our Team Info Sheet.
2. Download the Team Registration Form. Team member "titles" on this sheet
are just for fun! Fill out the form and mail it to us at #201, 10621 100 Ave,
Edmonton, AB T5J 0B3, or fax it to us at (780) 482-3027.
3.
To give you and your teammates some ideas, download our Sample Team
Fundraising Letter, and our Tips for Fundraising. Now you're ready to start
collecting!

Can I help with the event?
Yes! We have a wide range of volunteer positions available for this event. Please see our volunteer sheet for more information.
