What is the Open Minds Walk and Run?
Open Minds is much more than a walk and run. It's a place where people with mental illness, their families, friends, and health professionals come together to celebrate their successes, encourage those still on their journey to recovery, and (most importantly) have A LOT of fun.
Participants raise pledges leading up to the event. On event day they turn in their pledges, enjoy a light breakfast, and then take part in one of our four events. The line up is as follows:
- 2.5k Fun Walk for Mental Illness. Our strength is in our numbers! Family, friends and persons with mental illness of all ages and athletic ability are invited to walk together once around Hawrelak Park’s ring road. The fun walk has always been the heart of our event.
- 5k Trail Walk. This walk presents a challenge for those who want to pick up the pace while enjoying the beautiful river valley trails. This is a chip-timed event.
- 5k Road Run. For those runners who like a shorter length and a smoother running surface, we’ve brought back our original 5k run, twice around Hawrelak Park. It is now a chip-timed event.
- 10k Trail Run. This challenging chip-timed event takes runners along the lush North Saskatchewan River bank from Hawrelak to Emily Murphy Park and back again.
After the walking or running, participants enjoy a free barbecue provided by Canadian Western Bank. There will be a kids activity zone (including bouncy castles), high energy roots reggae music performed by the critically acclaimed group Souljah Fyah, and lots of prizes for participants.
What a great way to spend a Sunday in September!

Why is my support needed?
One person in 100 is diagnosed with schizophrenia, most often in adolescence or early adulthood. Many more struggle with related mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, depression, and psychosis.
Your pledges allow the Edmonton Chapter to reach out to families and individuals whose lives have been clouded by these illnesses and bring them back into the light. We restore hope by providing:
- Support programs for family members and people living with any mental illness
- Public education campaigns to eliminate stigma
- Outreach services to help people maintain independence and social support, and
-
Our tireless work to improve mental health care in Alberta.
We are a family-based organization that has earned a great deal of admiration and respect because we build compassion in the community and help those affected by severe mental illness get their lives back.

What are the registration fees?

There is no fee for participating in the 2.5 k fun walk. If you raise $20 or more in pledges, you will get a free Zorrel 1050 technical t-shirt, water bottle, and bonus draw prize entry.

All proceeds from the purchase of these beautiful iris bunches will go to your Edmonton & Area
Chapter for programs that provide information, individual and family support, public education, outreach services, and advocacy for families and individuals living with schizophrenia and other mental illnesses.
