The SSA's Alberta Premiere of South African film OIL ON WATER
When: Saturday & Sunday, August 30th and 31st.
Where: Stanley A. Milner Library Theatre (lower level of downtown library).
Cost: Admission is based on a no pressure, "donate-what-you-can" policy.
The SSA, Edmonton & Area Chapter (SSAEA) proudly presents Peter Matthews' Oil on Water, an award-winning film from South Africa that explores the repercussions of undiagnosed mental illness.
"To me this movie captures the consequences of standing by and not doing anything when someone first exhibits symptoms of schizophrenia," says Giri Puligandla, E.D. of the SSAEA. "It is a beautiful film, rich in terms of cinematic artistry as well as pure educational value. The most interesting thing to me is how much we appear to share with a place so far away both geographically and culturally. It just goes to show how much needs to be done to combat stigma at a global level. Too many tragedies for no good reason other than ignorance."
